Our currency: words. The precision of words
Last night I was reading a kids' book on Africa. It was talking about the Gold Coast/Ghana, the gaining of independence. It's struck me for some time, and I'm slightly amazed that the following hasn't been mentioned much and made more of
I'd expect to have heard of it somehow if it had. 'Gaining of independence'.
Countries gain BACK their independence.
It's true I write this in the language of the conquering tribe, where we're all very well trained to think as we're instructed to. (The word 'all' there is extraordinarily inclusive). I would just have expected somebody to make capital here.
In passing. Passing
This (blog) will not take any political slant. I do not ever expect to meet anyone less political than me.
Just thought to mention...And I've pointed-up why writers get into more trouble with politicians than of our other artistic bros/sisters
There's lighter stuff in the world. I'll find some next entry!

Gold Coast/ Ghana and British history
Yes, its a very hidden history: one the British have an amnesia for, since it is shameful the deeds done there in the search for gold; then (for much longr) people to put to work as slaves on plantations across the Atlantic. The bicentennary of slave trade abolition slipped by in 2007. The subject's on the national curriculum now, so hopefully its changing a bit. PS thanks for doing that poem at the Museum of Science & Industry in.. was it May? -Pete
